Grandparents Are Critical to the Development of Children
Video Transcribed: How important are grandparents in a child’s life? Hi, I’m Tulsa Grandparents Rights Attorney, Justin Mosteller and I’m going to help answer this question for you today.
Grandparents are critical to the development of children. Research has been done to show that grandparents provide different things to a child than their parents and my own life has really, really proven this out. My relationship with my grandparents is really the reason that I’m so passionate about grandparent visitation rights, as a part of my practice today.
My grandfather provided, my maternal grandfather provided, a moral sense that really did become my guiding principles in life. He taught me that if you’re ever feeling sad, focus on other people and I’ve put that into practice in my life, into my practice itself, and I really can say that that’s an amazing lesson to learn and it’s not that my parents didn’t teach those lessons too. And they did and obviously, your parents are the most important thing in a child’s life but grandparents can provide something different; qualitatively it’s different.
A grandparent can help a child to understand their parents a little better. So a good relationship with the grandparents can lead to a good relationship between parent and child. A lot of parents forget that and that’s a very important role.
Also, grandparents provide moral lessons that are often received differently by children than the lessons provided by their parents. There’s something about somebody that you don’t see every single day, who is a critical part of your family, teaching these lessons, that makes children more receptive to those messages.
So a grandparent is critical. You could also be good… A safe place for the child to receive daycare. In those situations, grandparents are absolutely, qualitatively superior for a child than a regular daycare. And the relationship that’s fostered between grandparent and grandchild is just a further bolstering of that safe feeling for the child. I hear judges say often that the more people in a child’s life that love them, the better, and that’s absolutely true, and that’s been shown to be true in research.
So if you have a grandparent visitation issue, if you’re being denied visitation, bear in mind, that it is very important to establish and maintain that relationship and if you’re in that situation, If you have any more questions, feel free to seek counsel from our office to speak with an Oklahoma Grandparents Rights Attorney, we’d be happy to help.
